At the moment I have set up my old Draytek 2860n as an access point connected to the supplied Fritzbox 7530ax router from my service provider via Ethernet. When I'm near the Fritzbox my wifi speed is 228 Mbps down and 73.9 Mbps up, but when I'm near the 2860 I only get 21.6 Mbps down and 27.1 Mbps up. I assume that this is due to the older technology of the 2860. If I got a VigorAP 906 would this increase the speed to match the Fritzbox?

I should mention that I only want to use it as an access point and use the Ethernet ports to connect various hardware.

Short answer - yes. AX vs. N wi-fi standards.

I think I'd wait for the AP905 though which is imminent now and will come with DrayOS 5 rather than 4 which the 906 has.

Yep, you can do whatever you want with it - no issues.

Just to add, the AP906 seems like a dead end product - used as a root it can only connect to other AP906 devices and seems to only be a uk device (ie not mentioned on Draytek.com only co.uk)

I had already decided to take Ian's advice and wait for the AP905 to be available online. It was released today so hopefully won't be too long before I can get one.
