3G / 4G Dongle Setup
X. WAN
DrayTek Vigor routers with USB ports can attach a supported 4G, 3G or LTE modem and use that modem for Internet access, as the WAN3 or WAN4 interface.
This guide details how to check that your modem is being detected by the router and configure the router to use the modem for Internet access.
Prerequisites
- A Vigor Router supporting USB Dongles
- A compatible USB 3G / 4G Dongle (please see our supported dongle list here
- The SIM card supplied by your mobile company
- A suitable contract with your mobile phone company
Test your 3G /4G Modem First!
We recommend that you firstly connect your USB dongle to a PC and test it thoroughly using the instructions provided by the supplier. This is to ensure that it works correctly, and that you have coverage in your area. If all is well, you can then setup the router for use with your 3G/4G device. Don't forget to install the SIM card into the dongle. Disconnect the adapter from the PC when installing or removing a SIM card.

DrayTek are not responsible and have no control over local network/provider operations, nor make any claim over specific network compatibility. Please assure yourself that the router will be compatible with your chosen cellular network and provider and that you have adequate signal coverage before committing to any contract term. Please also ensure that your chosen provider and the tariff allows access to all of your required applications (e.g. VPN, VoIP, Messaging etc.) as many packages exist, some blocking certain data types.
In the Vigor 28xx series routers, a 3G or 4G dongle can be used for load balance or fail over in case the primary ADSL or VDSL link were to go down. Although it can also be used as a primary Internet connection if required. The 2760 uses the 3G/4G in backup mode or as a main connection if no ADSL/VDSL is active. These settings apply to all above routers
Turn OFF the Vigor router. Connect the USB 3G Modem to the router's USB socket on the front then turn the router back on. Once the router has completed its boot up cycle, you can access its web interface and open the [WAN] >> [General Setup] menu:
Make sure the USB WAN port is set to Always On. If set in Backup mode, the connection will only establish if the primary WAN interface is down according to the Backup option used.

Go to [WAN] >> [Internet Access] and set the Access Mode to 3G/4G USB Modem(PPP mode) and click on the Details Page:

If your mobile network provider requires an APN name then enter it into the APN Name box and click Apply. The Modem initial string will change to the corresponding APN name.
Specify the PPP Username and PPP Password if required by your provider:

Click OK to save the settings. Then check the [Online Status] >> [Physical Connection] page of the router to confirm the connection.

The DHCP setup is similar the PPP setup. A link to supported dongles is available on the Requirements tab. Make sure the WAN USB port is set to Always On. If set in Backup mode the connection will be established only if the WAN interface you select is down according to the Backup option used.
Turn OFF the router. Connect the USB 4G Modem to the router's USB port on the front of the unit. Turn the router back on. Once the router has completed its reboot cycle, you can access its web interface and open the [WAN] >> [Internet Access] menu. Select the appropriate profile which has the dongle connected, either WAN3 or WAN4.
Set the Access Mode to 3G/4G USB Modem(DHCP mode) and click on the Details Page:

Enable the profile and click OK. It is not necessary to type in any APN or SIM PIN code information, unless the SIM PIN code was previously changed in which case you'll need to use the new PIN Code.

Confirm the connection under [Online Status] >> [Physical Connection]

In most cases the 4G dongle won't get a public IP address. Make sure that the LAN IP address of the router is on a different subnet, otherwise this will create routing problems preventing you from getting on line.
If you notice the LAN and WAN IP addresses are on the same subnet go to [LAN] >> [General Setup] and click on the Details Page of LAN1 or the LAN conflicting with the WAN IP of the router in case you are running multiple subnets:

Configure both the IP address of the router under Network Configuration and the DHCP Server Configuration if it is enabled on the router. Set the Start IP Address and IP Pool Counts with the Gateway IP Address pointing to the IP address of the router.
After you click OK to save the settings you will be asked to restart, so that it applies the settings.

Restart the router Using current configuration settings. After the router restarts it will be available on the new LAN IP address assigned to the router. You can confirm connectivity under the [Online Status] >> [Physical Connection] as mentioned above.
It is possible to access the USB modem's web interface to check signal and credit status using the Gateway Info link on the router's Online Status page.
The 3900 series routers can use 3G and 4G access for failover, or backup to primary WAN; the USB dongle can also be used as a primary Internet connection.
Turn OFF the router. Connect the USB 3G Modem to the router's USB port on the front of the unit, turn the router back on. Once the router has completed its reboot cycle, you can access its web interface and open the [WAN] >> [General Setup] menu and select the USB 3G tab.

Check to enable the profile and select the USB 3G tab:

Type in the APN details your ISP has recommended and click Apply. You can check the status of the connection on the Online Status page of the router
