Wake on LAN from outside home was created by Steve
Hi all, I’m looking for assistance with regards wake on LAN, My set up is as follows : I have an app on my phone that will send the WOL packet to my selected device, a QNAP NAS. My router is the Vigor2860ac on current firmware. On the phone I have two ‘buttons’ set up. One to trigger the WOL internally on my private network (192.168.x.x) and another that should do it on my public IP over the WAN - this is a fixed IP. Internally everything works fine so the NAS is listening for the WOL signal. Externally it fails to work. In the router I have the Bind IP to MAC set up for the NAS. Strict Bind is unchecked. Port Redirection is set to send Port 9 UDP to the NAS. I also enabled UDP Port 9 in [NAT>>Open Ports] as well. Is there anything else I need to set. Also as a final note incase anyone suggests using [Applications>>Wake on LAN] via the router GUI to power up the NAS I don’t want my router GUI WAN facing for obvious reasons. Thanks in advanceSteve

I suggest you try using a vpn (eg Draytek Smartvpn) app on your phone and connect to the router using that. I claim no expertise, but I think that should mean any WOL packets sent will then be seen as coming from your LAN and not from an external IP.

I've used A VPN and then the router "Wake On Lan" function very successfully.
+1 for piste basher's suggested approach.

Many thanks for the quick response.
That has worked for me. Although quick follow on question.
My NAS is on IP 192.168.1.1 now when I go into work they have a server who is also on 192.168.1.1 can I assume that I'm going to have to disconnect from my works network so when I connect to home via the phone it doesn't see two servers with the same IP?
Thanks Again

I suspect this won't be a problem.
The VPN is effectively a "tunnel" between your phone and your home network.
You should get your (home) router login page and then be able to select the "Wake On Lan" in the menus.
Nothing on the work network should be visible.

Hi Steve, just to add...
That depends on the "Metric" of the routing table within your device. If the metric is weighted more towards a certain route, it will take that route first, i.e the route via your VPN tunnel or the route via your work's wireless network.
With some systems (your device), you can force the route by changing the routing table to direct the traffic where you would like it to go, including the metric value. (Just thought it was worth mentioning)
