Does the 2136 support MultiNAT / WAN Aliases?

I'm currently running a 2860Vac and am very happy with my setup but within the next month or so FTTP will finally be arriving and therefore it's time to replace it for something with a higher firewall throughput.  I'd originally planned to go like for like and buy a 2866 but I'm put off by the fact that this is a 4 year old model and on checking, the 2136ax looks to possibly be better suited for what I need.

I currently have a block of 6 usable IPs from my ISP. One is used by the router and will be the default for anything talking to the Internet but the remaining 5 are set up as WAN aliases then assigned to specific devices via the load balance / route policy on my 2860.  The 2136 manual briefly mentions "IP alias" as part of the advanced mode WAN setup but doesn't have much detail.  Can anyone confirm whether my multiNAT setup remains possible on the 2136?

Hi @cartmane

And to continue our conversation..... I have this raised as another ticket with support. The 2136 doesn't support multi NAT. It does, however have a WAN IP alias function, but you can't configure this for a PPPoE connection (although you CAN configure it for a STATIC or DHCP connection). I think this was "an oversight", and I'm hoping that a future firmware update will include this functionality given that the code's already there and just needs adding to the PPPoE option!

It is possible to configure the five remaining public IP's of a /29 allocation in the VIRTUAL WAN tab, but these connections are not NATed.

John.

Thanks John

I'd feared that there could be some issues when the documentation was vague
I'm not keen on buying something that will mean that I can't keep my setup as it is today - what was your reason for moving away from your 2866 as I guess it will do what I require straight away?
I spoke to Zen this afternoon & they claim their bundled (Fritzbox) router will do what I want but I'm not totally convinced & don't really want to move away from Draytek if I can help it as my APs are made by them & I've never been let down in over 13 years of using their products.

Steve

Good morning Steve,
You probably wont be surprised to hear that I am a fellow Zen customer. I don't think that the Fritz!box allows you to configure auxiliary IP's, but I may be wrong. (I use the Fritz!box as a glorified switch connected to the Vigor 2866, and it happily handles a couple of VoIP SIP accounts and provides 3 LAN ports and wireless ax connectivity in the TV room).

We've been with Zen since 2003 and used a Draytek 2820Vn for that connection. That got upgraded to a 2860Vac some years later, and most recently we upgraded to the 2866Vac when the line was upgraded to Openreach FTTP 1Gb/110Mb. The 2866 works fine for that FTTP connection with hardware acceleration enabled.

The reason for buying the 2136 is that we are upgrading the FTTP in October to City Fibre 2.3Gb/2.3Gb synchronous (still with Zen at the same price as the current Openreach line @ £55/month). On paper the 2136 is the only router that Draytek offer that has the clout to handle those speeds. I have, however broken my golden rule of not buying anything that has just been launched for exactly the reasons we are talking about!

So at the moment the 2136 sits on the shelf pretending to be an ornament, and acts as a reminder of why I shouldn't be an early adopter.

I'm just off to rattle supports cage again since they now seem to be ignoring me!

John

Lol, the similarities are uncanny!
- Zen since 2002 with a Speedtouch
- Moved to a Draytek 2850Vn in 2012 then onto a 2860Vac when FTTC came along
- My Fritzbox is used as an AP / switch in the loft but also as a DECT base station for a couple of SIP accounts as it handles voice far better than the Drayteks
- Draytek AP in a different part of the house

I'm so glad that I did my this due diligence on the 2136 but think that I'll give Draytek a call myself also as they'll not get the sale until they address the issue we're discussing.

I truly believe they're the best supplier for this type of router but they do need to look at their competitors like Fritzbox & copy some of their innovations in the high end models.

Steve

Draytek reply (despite me making the point about PPPoE) :
"WAN IP Alias is supported on the 2136ax, when you select Configuration > WAN then select Advanced Mode to ON, it then shows up allowing for IPv4 addresses to be put in."
