Hi, got a 2860n and ready to move to an updated model which I am guessing would be 2865AC (feel free to suggest otherwise).
However got a bit of a surprise when I tried to locate some suppliers - can't find 2865AC listed with reliable suppliers (there is a guy on Amazon), and in fact any supplier with Draytek stock either has very short list or says 'pre-order' (that was Scan Computers). Went to 'routers' (any brand) on 'nothing available'.

So, in short - anywhere you can bu a 2865AC from in the next two weeks or so?
Thanks.

You wouldn't be buying an 'ac' when you could buy an 'ax' model anyway.

The only scenario where you wouldn't is if you had a bunch of 'ac' AP's you were wanting to setup mesh with.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I'm buying for home and the 2865AC (which is listed as a current model on the Draytek site, so I assume they think some customers still want it if they manufacture it) is a fair bit cheaper than the AX.
Also to be honest, I don't rush into new standards in wifi etc., mainly because past experience has shown me that early adopters of stuff can end up dealing with various nightmares, as well as pay a lot before prices come down.
To be fair, I have now found the AX at just £60 more - and of course that IS listed and in stock at various places. So I might consider it.
Any 'gotchas' with the 2865AX?   I've got an AP310 Range Extender which I use from time to time.

Cheers

I think it's more likely they've got surplus old stock sitting on shelves and can't get rid of 're still manufacturing it.  The 2866 is still listed but they've made it clear on webinars that in reality it's gone because 't relevant anymore.

The 2865ax released in mid-2021 and is due to be replaced within the next 12-months by the 2867 (DrayOS 5) - so unless you're uber risk-averse I would think that at 4 years old nobody is going to suggest you're 'rushing into it' - more likely 'left it too late'.

For ref:-
AC wifi (5) is 12 years old.
AX wifi (6) is 4 years old.
Wi-Fi 7 is 1 year old.

AP310?   You sure it's not an 810? - can't find any mention of a 310.

In terms of a gotcha (and I've had both 2866Lac and 2866ax - the difference to the 2865 is G-Fast support - otherwise identical) - there isn't one with the ax but there is with the ac - the wi-fi chipset it uses means that if you want to use 5GHz bandwidths of 40/80/160  you HAVE to use a 2.4GHz bandwidth greater than 20.  The interface lets you think you've got it set but if you then do a wi-fi scan you'll find you only have 20MHz on the 5GHz band. And if you have multiple access-points that's an idiotic limitation to have introduced as they will then likely overlap on the 2.4GHz band.  Both UK and AU helpdesks confirmed this: -

"The issue is caused by a known hardware limitation with the Wi-Fi AC chipset (2135ac/2765ac/2927ac/2865ac/2866ac),This cannot be resolved by updating firmware. They mentioned that 5 GHz can work at 80 MHz when 2.4 GHz is disabled. Also, "5GHz will not work on higher channel bandwidth unless 2.4 is set to 20/40MHz or 40MHz.""

but they're very coy about making it public knowledge.  The upshot of this is that even a 2860ac is actually better than the 2865ac for wi-fi purposes!

>>so unless you're uber risk-averse I would think that at 4 years old nobody is going to suggest you're 'rushing into it' - more likely 'left it too late'.<<
:O)
Thanks for the detailed reply, think you have more or less convinced me about the AX (looks wistfully at rapidly declining wallet due to expenses incurred since 'upgrading' from 10 year old HP Z Xeon ...)

>>AP310?   You sure it's not an 810? - can't find any mention of a 310.<< - had me doubting for a minute, but just copied this from the Manual PDF:
"VigorAP 810 Wireless Access Point  User’s Guide Version: 2.3 Firmware Version: V1.2.6" and (phew) found ths:[that was a link to the 810 on the support/downloads page if it gets removed by forum].

Meant to say, a couple of the reasons for sticking with Draytek as a brand is the lengthy support policy plus the advice from this forum, and of course the fact that the Vigor's offer so much in the way of granular control (even though the UI can often mystify me :O(
Very interesting about the 2860AC vs the 2865AC.  Love it when you invest in 'The Latest' only to find some unpleasant backward step. My new PC is all SSD internal/external, and that has already caused chewed fingernails compared to ye olde spinning platters which have never let me down yet.

I take it you are on a copper (VDSL) broadband service.

How long is it likely to be before full fibre is available to you?

What do you see as the limitations of the 2860n? (I assume WiFi performance).

If that's it at the moment, I might consider buying a DrayTek VigorAP 905 wireless access point and hanging on for the arrival of full fibre.

Alternatively the 2860AC is quite reasonable second hand, but personally I would go the AP 905 route and hang on for the next round of routers I think.
